CRM Implementation Failure: A Recipe For Success
I was recently asked ‘Why do CRM implementations fail?’ While there are many causes, I would argue the main reason for a CRM implementation failure is lack of a proper plan.
Note the word ‘proper’.
I have been involved in implementations where was the plan was simply ‘Implement CRM’ and that was as deep as it got. So, if you are looking to have a failed implementation, here is my simple, but proper, recipe for success:
Have No Idea What Is To Be Gained From CRM . Ignore the tried-and-true S.M.A.R.T. plan for goals and make sure you don’t have a list of definitive achievements you want the system help you accomplish.
Shun Involvement From The Initial End-Users From The Very Beginning . Often CRM begins with Business Development and/or Sales and grows from there. Therefore, make sure you ignore their input. Remember, implementing CRM underlines the wise-old saying, “Get them to help plan the fight or else they may fight the plan.” Having the early adopters fighting the plan is key to a successful failed implementation.
Make Sure Management Lacks Understanding What CRM Can Do. If management promotes and supports the program, then your goal of a failed implementation will be greatly hampered.
Make Sure You Are Buying A Size-Seven Shoe For A Size-Ten Foot . (Or vice-versa) What I mean by that is make sure you come out of the gate with an ill-fitting system that does not meet your exact needs. Smother the end-user with unnecessary features or limit them with not enough.
Skimp On Training. Nothing will ensure you reach the goal of failure faster than dropping a twenty-pound user manual on someone’s desk and saying, “If you have any questions…the index is in the back.”
No Data Standards. Trust me on this one! If there are no standards it won’t take long for there to be five entries for Walmart (or more) which will lead to contacts being added to different accounts and notes added to different entries for the same contact. This alone will prove to be huge in helping you achieve your goal of a failed implementation.
Example:
Walmart
Wal-mart
Walmart, Inc.
Walmart Inc.
Wal-mart, Inc
No Champions! Make sure there is no one involved who is truly enthusiastic about what CRM can do and champion the implementation. That ‘loving feeling’ will likely wane after a few weeks and an enthusiastic champion could ruin your chances for failure.
Just by asking ‘Why do CRM implementations fail?’ tells me you are off to a good start.
Best of success!
